2009 Nissan Altima Steering Lock Warranty Extended Indefinitely – Updated to only 6 Yrs :(

I just got off the phone with my dealer.  They have extended the warranty of the 2009 Nissan Altima Steering Lock forever!  🙂  I am heading to the dealership tonight to get mine replaced.

Update:  Even though my steering lock is replaced I just received a mailing regarding the Steering Lock Warranty Extension.  If you did not receive yours contact the dealer who sold your car.

While I am happy to have had my steering lock replaced for free, I have to say that the official position from Nissan appears to be “We would rather have our customers get stranded and learn about the steering lock that way then do a recall”.  From a customer loyalty perspective this will have an impact on the next brand of car I will be purchasing.

Update:

I just did a search on 2009 Nissan Altima Steering Lock and found that indefinitely was too long for Nissan.  After all of the horrible stories I am going to reengage Girard Gibbs to see if anything can be done to try to force a recall.

Electronic Steering Column Lock (ESCL) Warranty Extension

Nissan is extending the warranty on 2009 Altima and Maxima vehicles for the Electronic Steering Column Lock (ESCL) Unit. For affected vehicles, the warranty coverage on these components will be extended from its original duration of 36 months/36,000 miles to 72 months/unlimited miles. All other warranty terms, conditions and limitations otherwise remain unchanged and continue to apply.

2016 Update:  It appears they took the link down so I updated the link to go to the Way back machine cached copy.

Here is a link to a PDF printout in case they take the WayBackMachine down as well

Update 3/6/16:

After learning that the Warranty has been discontinued as of January 1st 2016 I have learned that everyone’s only hope is to file a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety administration. This is step one to teiggering a recall. Make sure you detail the dangers of this defect (e.g if the defect happened in the wild you could have died). If enough people share this level of detail they may open an investigation on this issue and demand a recall. If a recall is performed all users who paid for the repair will be refunded. Here is the form. Anyone can submit so have all members of your family at risk due to this issue submit.

  1. Call Cody a consumer affairs manager, or something at Nissan. Nissan has extended the warranty for reimbursements to those that have paid out of pocket for this repair. If over $500 they want proof you own the car (insurance card, title, etc.) His direct line is
1-615-725-7675. Leave a detailed voicemail with your VIN number, date of service, dealership name & address, and a number to reach you.
